FIRST PRINCIPLES

The Founding Fathers rejected the notion of divine right, embracing instead the revolutionary idea that government derives its power from the consent of the governed. The Woodrow Family recognizes that the freedoms and institutions born of this American experiment were hard-won—and remain vulnerable.

The Macatawa Foundation is therefore committed to defending the core principles of a free society: freedom of speech, limited government, the rule of law, private property, and freedom of assembly. Foundation grants will support efforts that advance these ideals.

To that end, the Foundation will focus its giving on three key areas vital to liberty and a healthy society: education, policy development, and government oversight.

ENHANCED EDUCATION
A strong K–12 education is essential to sustaining a free, open, and productive society. It equips individuals with the character, discipline, and knowledge needed to thrive. The Foundation is committed to supporting high-quality educational alternatives that uphold academic excellence and intellectual freedom. We oppose the use of ideologically biased materials, suppression of open debate, and the erosion of academic standards.
Our focus is on promoting a classical curriculum that fosters an appreciation for the liberal arts, sciences, and civics—preparing students to be thoughtful, engaged citizens capable of leading meaningful lives.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT

The Foundation believes that sound public policy is rooted in the principles of capitalism and free markets - entrepreneurship, innovation, voluntary exchange, and respect for the rule of law.  Adhering to these principles is essential to creating public policy that promotes broad-based opportunity and economic prosperity. We support organizations that conduct in-depth research and analysis providing critical insights, often unavailable to the public and policymakers, which contribute to informed policy development.  By preserving institutional knowledge and advocating for consistent policy direction, these organizations help shape effective, forward-looking governance.

GOVERNMENT OVERSIGHT
Public institutions exist to serve the people while operating within constitutional bounds. The Foundation supports organizations that uphold transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in federal and state government. Effective oversight ensures that government power is exercised within legal and constitutional limits, safeguarding individual liberty and maintaining public trust.
